By informing the community as a whole about Celiac disease, we make it easier for ourselves as Celiacs (or friends of Celiacs) to purchase products that are ok for us to eat (by convincing companies to have complete ingredient lists including all sources of possible gluten) and to go out to restaurants by making sure that they are aware of what contains gluten and how to avoid cross contamination. It is also important to 'get the word out' to others who may be suffering but are not yet diagnosed.

It is important for all of us to help 'get the word' out about Celiac disease, and here are several ways in which you can help!
Prepare a gluten free meal to share with your friends and family so they can taste how good gluten free can be!
Talk with the manager of your local grocery store, explaining the importance of the availability of gluten-free options.
Talk to the manager at your favourite restaurant about what foods are safe for you to eat and how to avoid cross contamination in the kitchen. Find out what menu items are safe for Celiacs and which ones can be modified for you (then share them with all your friends at the Gluten Free Dinner Club).
Contact a food manufacturer. Write, e-mail or phone food manufacturers thanking them for voluntarily providing consumers with adequate ingredient and processing information on labels or providing them with a "celiac friendly" label idea, or reminding them of the benefits to you and your family of full disclosure of ingredient sources on food labels.
Join the Canadian Celiac Association to help fund the national office and your local chapter. Membership fees go to research, chapter newsletters, national newsletters, and new member packages. The benefits are enormous! The association is your best source for any questions you may have about Celiac Disease.

The Creperie

The dinner club finally made it to the Creperie for a totally fantabulistic 3 course meal! The Creperie is absolutely wonderful for Celiacs, and they are very aware about gluten, cross contamination and the whole shabang. They also do 95% of their menu gluten free (Jenny was very impressed that the gluten free menu actually said 'in a gluten free crepe'). I had the opportunity to speak with the head chef, Knut, personally, and I was very impressed.

A total of 7 of us went for dinner on September 14. We started the evening out with homemade gluten free bread, made fresh everyday by the creperie chefs! They even shared the recipe with us! We then all enjoyed an appetizer of either soup or salad. I personally upgraded to the baked french onion soup...yum! We then endulged in a main course crepe. The most popular at the table seemed to be the corden bleu, but I really enjoyed my Crepes pacifico (filled with salmon, baby shrimp, asparagus, & dill). These crepes were seriously to-die-for delicious, and there was a lot of sharing going on around the table. For dessert, we had crepes filled with icecream and topped with whipped cream, almonds, and raspberry or chocolate sauce. I don't think that the dessert sat on the table for more than 5 minutes. We couldn't stop eating!

The food at the creperie is definitely a 10/10! The service was lacking, and I would probably give it only 3/10. I suppose that part of the reason it was so slow was due to the fact that gluten-free is a custom order, but we were there for nearly 4 hours, which had a few heads nodding by the time dessert rolled around.

Check out the awesome time we had, and some photos of our delish food!

Why 18-35?

I've been getting a lot of flak from people due to the fact that I have limited the Dinner Club for people age 18-35. I do realize that people of all ages have Celiac disease, but it's my club, so I can do what I want to. If you would like a dinner club for someone your age, please feel free to start one up. I would be glad to help.
I have made my dinner club age restricted for several reasons, and will explain them here:
1) The first time I went to a Celiac event I was 18. There was no one else over the age of 12 or under the age of 60 that was present that had celiac disease (some mom's of the little kids were there, but none diagnosed). This made me feel very alone. It is hardly peer support when everyone is 1/2 your age, or old enough to be your grandma. This club is peer support for younger adults.
2) Most of the people in the club are still young enough that we go out to bars, are not married, and do not have kids (although there are a couple of exceptions). We might talk about things like dating, sex, drinking, etc. that are not necessarily appropriate for 'adults', and we do not want to feel uncomfortable at our social events.
3) You may notice that there are not many people in this age range that go to other Celiac events. That is because we can not always afford $40 a ticket and we are not usually that interested in going to meetings. It is also almost always people over 40 at these events, and it makes us feel isolated again.
4) It is important to get young Celiacs involved in Celiac awareness & support.

I'm really sorry if you wanted to join, but do not fit the age limit. This is, however, a support group for people age 18-35 more than it is a dinner club. Since a few of you have asked, there is indeed gluten free beer, and it is not bad at all, although a little pricey (I think around $18 for a six pack). The kind that is available in Edmonton is called La Messagere. It is brewed from rice & buckwheat. There are supposedly quite a few stores that carry it, but I know that you can for sure get it at the 123rd Street Liquor store on 123 Street & 105 Ave (only about 10 blocks from Kinnikinnick if you are in the area picking up your bread).

8th Annual Cycling for Celiacs

It is once again that time of year where a group of crazy celiacs tune up their bikes and prepare for the 11 day ride from Victoria to Edmonton. The purpose of the long ride is to help raise awareness about Celiac disease, as well as to raise funds for the J.A. Campbell research fund. All Celiacs benefit from the work of a few. The more people that we can make aware about Celiac disease, the better it is for us all, as more restaurants, hotels, food manufacturers, and just the general public become aware of what it means to be gluten free. With more funds for research, we are closer to finding alternative treatments, can help improve diagnostic tools, and find better substitutes for gluten in foods. If you would like to donate to Cycling for Celiacs, please contact Leticia at 1-780-482-2708, or send your cheques to Cycling for Celiacs @ 5R17 11111 Jasper Avenue, Edmonton, AB, T5K 0L4. This hidden treasure makes authentic El Salvadorean and Mexican foods, making you feel as though you were actually in El Salvador! They also play great latin tunes to enhance the whole experience. Nearly all of the food on the menu is naturally gluten free, and most of the other things can be made gluten free (watch out for the enchiladas mexicanas, burritos, & quesadillas). I personally decided to go crazy on the appetizers, and was not disappointed by a single one. Most of the appetizers could be considered a light meal, as several of them even come with a light salad. The flautas were a favourite of mine, and I've ordered them a couple of times since. I just can't resist! The prices are very reasonable, and range from about $6.95-$18 for a meal. The restaurant is quite small, and family owned & operated. They do not have a large staff, and so you may have to wait a bit for your meal. It is a great opportunity for some wine & good conversation! I highly recommend El Rancho to anybody craving a taste of authentic latin food, good music, and a friendly atmosphere. El Rancho is located at 11810 87 Street, Edmonton.

Customer Appreciation Night

El Rancho restaurant is having a customer appreciation night on February 24. The tentative plan for now is El Rancho Restaurant on Friday February 16th. They are only open until 9, so we might have to make dinner a little earlier this time, so I'm aiming for 6:30. The food is awesome, and not too expensive. The most expensive entree is around $16, but most are less than $12, and are still quite filling. I have yet to talk to the restaurant about us coming, so I don't want to make definite plans, but hopefully I will get a hold of them this week (the food is so authentic, it is difficult to get somebody on the phone who speaks English!). I will send you all an email when I have the exact details. I haven't forgotton about the dinner club, I just don't know when to set the date. I am waiting for my nephew to be born, and so I don't want to set the date until I know when I will have to go down to Calgary to see him (it is my first time being an aunt, so I am way too excited to have to wait any longer than I have to). Since he has inconveniently not been born yet, the dinner may not be until the end of the month or the beginning of February. I have found a place to go that is not to hard on the wallet, but still tastes super great though! More info to come soon....

Celiac Restaurant Cards

Several months ago, my friend David was travelling to India on business, and was asking me if I knew about gluten free Indian food. I told him that Indian food is a great gluten free choice, since most of it can easily be made gluten free, and usually is! I also referred him to this great website that has gluten free restaurant cards in at least 20 languages, including Hindi.
It only occurs to me now that others in the club may travel as well, and could find this site useful. The website is http://www.celiactravel.com/restaurant-cards.html.
Here is a sample of what the card says in English:

www.CeliacTravel.com

SPLITT closed!

I know that I've never really posted about SPLITT before, because it is a restaurant in Calgary, but as many of us Edmontonians travel to Calgary on a fairly regular basis it may have some impact. SPLITT is a restaurant where nearly every menu item for breakfast, lunch, and dinner can be ordered gluten free/dairy free which is perfect for Celiac's and non-Celiacs alike. They even serve gluten free beer! They have the absolute best gf fish & chips, and everything else is pretty good too (when's the last time you had ginger beef?). Unfortunately right around Christmas time, they had to close their doors. Hopefully this is just a temporary thing, as they are fighting to reopen.
Here is a copy of an email I received from Dave, the owner of SPLITT.

Hello Celiac friends. Dave from Splitt here. Yes it is true Splitt is done and it is very unfortunate. We definitely want Splitt to come back but I need all of your help. We are currently in a legal battle for defamation and I need to build as strong of case as possible. In order for this to happen I need to show that Splitt was a destination for allot of people not just a neighborhood pub/restaurant. So if at all possible can each person on this list please send me there postal code with there name so I can show that people travel to come here and either NW / NE / SW / SE. Believe me this information will go no further than myself and my lawyer and possible the court if it goes that far I need to put a geographical representation of our patrons.

I would appreciate all of your help....Please....

Thanks,

dave

If you want to support SPLITT, please email your name, postal code, city to splittclosure@hotmail.com.

Happy Holidays

December is a very busy month and so the next dinner will not be until January 2007. If anybody has any suggestions as to where we should go for the January dinner please submit your requests to me by email by the new year. If we don't go to your spot this time, hopefully we'll make it next time. We are looking for somewhere a little cheaper for the next dinner, since we will probably all be broke following the holiday season (Entrees less than $12/person). Also, if anyone has any good holiday recipes, I'd love to post them! We all need good GF treats too!

Thanks to everybody who joined for dinners in 2006!

The King & I Thai Restaurant

On November 17 the dinner club went adventuring into Thai cuisine at The King & I. There were a total of 9 people, 6 celiacs and 3 celiac supporters, and the food was enjoyed by all. The King & I gave us a chance to enjoy a meal with shared plates that everyone could enjoy (a rare treat for a Celiac). Eric, the manager, chose a few selections from the menu for us to share, although there are many more options that can be made celiac friendly. For starters we enjoyed the beef & chicken satay dishes with a delicious peanut sauce for dipping (I definitely recommend these) and the salad rolls. We then had coconut rice, Chu Chu Kai (a chicken dish), Pork Tenderloin with Sweet & Sour Chili Sauce, Beef with Basil & Bean sprouts in a black pepper sauce (a little spicy), Pad Kra Pao Kung (Prawns & Basil) and a mixed vegetable dish served in peanut sauce. We were all stuffed to the brim by the end of the evening, and there was even enough left over for Jayson to have lunch & dinner the next day (everybody else was too full to consider eating anymore at anytime).

The King & I is located at 8208 107 Street (just off of Whyte Ave behind Crankpots).

Thai Food

The next dinner will be some totally yummilicious thai food at The King & I on Whyte Ave and 107th Street Friday November 17 at 7:00 p.m.

Next Dinnerclub

Sorry I haven't been able to organize a dinner club in the last little while, but I have been having restaurant issues and have been extremely busy with school (midterms just finished yesterday).

Please check out the following link for more information on why Celiac Awareness is so important:
http://www.celiac.ca/EnglishCCA/eawareness.html

GF Menu for Louisiana Purchase

For a copy Louisiana Purchase's gf menu, please email me:
gfdinnerclub@gmail.com

Louisiana Purchase

We finally made it out for the first dinner club meeting of the year and it was a smashing success. A total of 13 people made it, with only 5 of us being diagnosed Celiacs and the rest being friends/family of Celiacs. Louisiana Purchase did a fabulous job of accommodating our special gluten free diet. Allyn (the manager) was great at listening to our concerns and did a great job throughout the evening.
When we were ready to order they were able to modify just about everything on the menu to be gluten free (with the exceptions of 3 of the soups, 2 appetizers and 2 of the entrees), and even pan fried or baked items that they normally do in the fryer. It is important to let your server know that you need a gluten free meal every time, so that they know to modify your meal if necessary and to cook it in a non-contaminated area.
The night started out great with gluten free dinner buns from Kinnikinnick (they do not normally keep these on hand, but had them ordered specially for us!). A few of us brave souls decided to try the appetizer special, alligator cubes on a skewer with hot sauce on a bed of black beans. The overall consensus was positive. If you didn't know that it was alligator it would probably just taste like a pork/chicken blend, but with a little more texture. The entrees came out, and they all looked great! I personally had the Chicken Lafitte, an absolutely fabulous dish with chicken and smoked salmon with a herb cream cheese & roasted red bell pepper sauce. It was served with delicious seasonal vegetables and your choice of potatoes or rice. I also sampled some of the Pecan Pork Medallions from Nick's plate. They were so tender! Jenny's Natchez Shrimp were also a great choice. At the end of the meal, a chocolate lover's dream appeared in the form of Natalie's birthday cake. Both the flourless chocolate cake and the strawberries with a balsamic sauce are gluten free.
Louisiana Purchase is a great Celiac Friendly choice that I highly recommend. Your taste buds will thank you! (Warning: Louisiana Purchase is a Cajun style restaurant, so many of the menu items are spicy).

Lousiana Purchase is located at 10320 111 Street. I have finally found a time & place for the first get together of the dinner club. I have had several people recommend the Louisiana Purchase as an excellent place to eat gluten free. It is a cajun style restaurant with many gluten free choices. They even have a gluten free cake! I was thinking Friday September 1st around 7:00pm. I myself rollerblading about 8 km in the event (I was the only one with wheels on my feet, but hopefully that will change next year). Jayson lead the 10km mini-ride, and Natalie (and a few others) walked 5km. Many others participated in the ride, but the majority of the team opted for the 3km walk around the Legislature Grounds. After the mini-ride, we all enjoyed a wonderful BBQ put on by Outback Steakhouse. They served BBQ steak or chicken breast, salad, and GF buns from Kinnikinnick. There was also a delicious chocolate cake provided by Kinnikinnick. The price draw yielded a great many winners (There were more than 20 different prizes). I unfortunately did not win, however both Jayson & Natalie won gift certificates to restaurants in the Edmonton area (and they were for fairly generous amounts....Maybe I can convince them to take out the dinner club with them...). It was a great time, and by the end of the day we all left full to the max like the little gluttons for GF food that we are, and perhaps a little sunburned. Hopefully I'll see you all there next year!

Cycling for Celiacs Mini Ride & BBQ

Cycling for Celiacs is working to raise awareness and research funds. On Sunday August 20, 2006 there will be a mini-ride and BBQ, and I am encouraging you all to become involved. If you want to participate in the fundraiser you can choose from a 5km or 10km bike ride or a 3km or 5km run/walk, all in the area of the Legislative Grounds. Pledges collected by the riders will be used to provide services and education to Celiacs through the Canadian Celiac Association. If you don't want to ride, you can still come out and enjoy the BBQ! Outback Steakhouse will be catering the event (and there will be other goodies as well). The cost is only $10.00/person if you preregister, or $15.00 at the time of the event.

Here is the info:
Location: Alberta Legislative Grounds adjancent to Band Shell on 95 Ave & 107 St.
Registration: 1:00pm
Ride Departs: 2:00pm
BBQ: 3:00pm
Long Distance Riders Return: 4:00pm

The long distance riders are riding from Victoria to Edmonton in 10 days. Money raised from the long distance portion will go to research.

Hope to see you all there!!

Carolyn

Pizzeria Prego

Jenny, Jason, Nick & I finally made it down to Pizzeria Prego to check out their gluten free pizza, and it was fabulous. They do make regular pizza, but have a dedicated area of their kitchen where they prepare GF in order to prevent cross contamination. The gluten free pizza is available in the 10" size only and costs an extra $2.00, but it is so worth it to be able to eat delicious pizzeria pizza rather than having to make it yourself. The staff was very knowledgeable about what was safe for Celiacs and what wasn't. We can eat most of the toppings, excluding the pepperoni, sausage (although if you are OK with Spolumbos this shouldn't be a problem), alfredo sauce and pasta. If the pizza you wanted has these toppings, they will gladly substitute with a GF alternative for you (e.g. back bacon instead of pepperoni). It is always a good idea to double check with them before you place your order though. Other fabulous news is that they deliver!! It is free if you are within their zone and $3.00 if you are out of their free boundaries. Jenny was so excited to get pizza delivered she decided to order some the very next day!
Nick & Jason are both non-celiacs, but in support of us Celiacs, they willingly ate the GF pizza, and loved it! Nick even ate my leftovers! For both Jenny & I it had been a long time since we had eaten pizza out (7 years for me and 4 for Jenny). We were so excited that it probably took us twice as long to figure out what we wanted than it normally would have. Jenny is a severely sensitive celiac, and I would pretty much consider her a litmus test for gluten. Neither she nor I got sick at all.
The bad news is that Pizzeria Prego is not really a sit down restaurant. They have several tables for 2 for dining in, and were able to put 2 tables together for the 4 of us, but they could not really accommodate groups of more than 4 people, thus I will probably not be organizing any more dinner clubs there. However, if anyone is interested and doesn't want to go by themselves, I am a very willing companion!

Pizzeria Prego is located at 5860 111 Street NW in Lendrum Place Mall in Edmonton, AB. You can call them at 780-439-7734. They are open Mon-Thurs <st1:time minute="0" hour="11">11am-9pm</st1:time>, Fri-Sat <st1:time minute="0" hour="11">11am-11pm</st1:time>, and Sun <st1:time minute="0" hour="12">12pm-8pm</st1:time>.

Seal Yak

Dinner Anyone?

I was hoping to have the first meeting sometime in August. I am hoping that the GF Dinner Club will be able to meet approximately once every 2 months, or even more frequently. The idea is that before we meet, I will contact the restaurant and meet with them to discuss which foods are safe, which are not, and how to avoid cross contamination. I will also try to get a list of gluten free menu options from them. If there are any restaurants or types of food you would like to try, please feel free to make a suggestion, and I can look into it. It can be difficult as a celiac to eat out at restaurants and this is a great way to find new places that are more accommodating to our food sensitivities. It is also an opportunity for the celiac association to get the word out about celiac disease and educate the food industry about gluten intolerances.

This club is a great opportunity to meet other celiacs in our age group, and lets you get involved more with the celiac community. Many of us find it beneficial to have peer support, someone to talk to who has had similar experiences. Some of us have supportive people in our lives that we bring with us and you are always welcome to bring guests, but all guests must eat gluten free too. They can have gluten anytime, but with us they can really experience yummy gluten free food too. Everyone eating gluten free also helps to prevent any confusion, mix ups or cross contamination for our orders. It also prevents you from feeling like yet again you are limited. This is probably the most fiercely defended "rule" of the club. Everyone likes to know that the whole table is safe.

I want everyone to try new things and gain confidence in their ability to have a normal social existence and go out to safe restaurants where their needs are understood. I hope you will join us at as many dinners as you can.
See you soon!
Carolyn
